Zinc, Copper, Selenium, Manganese


Zinc is crucial for a healthy immune system and for metabolizing Essential Fatty Acids. As discussed, adequate amounts and proper absorption of EFAs are important for us.

Zinc is also an important player in the production of RNA and DNA, the primary building blocks of the body. It is essential for the normal functioning of the Central Nervous System and supports the body in making over 200 enzymes.


By helping with the absorption of iron, copper aids in the formation of hemoglobin and red blood cells. Used in balance with iron, zinc and B vitamins, copper assists in the healthy production of myelin.

Copper is also important for the production of collagen. Collagen is the protein responsible for the integrity of bone, tendon, skin and cartilage.


Selenium is an antioxidant and helps with the production of the Master Antioxidant, Glutathione. It is also known to work as a detoxifier for mercury levels in the body. Selenium works well in conjunction with Sulfur or MSM (see Sulfur section below).

Selenium levels have been found to be low in people with Parkinson's disease.

Selenium is important to us, in addition to its antioxidative power, it greatly assists in the metabolizing of Vitamin C and calcium.

Good natural sources of selenium are; brazil nuts, seafood, brown rice and onions.


Manganese is an antioxidant.

Manganese's primary function is to eliminate free radicals though it is also heavily involved in the metabolism of proteins, fats and energy. It also has a role in the biochemical reactions affecting the brain and that is one of the reasons that it's a key trace mineral for Multiple Sclerosis.

Foods that contain manganese are; brewer's yeast, oily seafoods, dark green, leafy vegetables, canned pineapple juice, avocados, apples, bananas and figs.
